Would you visit Colombia?  Thousands of young law enforcement trainees graduated to become police officers overnight.  With up to five armed young men debuting their uniforms at every  bus stop, they would be fools to attempt a kidnapping.  Uribe's right-wing government has no tolerance for the terror generated by the country's internal unrest and everybody agrees his tactics are working.  People are finally kissing their loved ones goodbye in the morning without the daunting fear that they may not return home.  Though the economy may never be as good as when it was funded by the Escobar drug cartel, the colombian quality of life is improving for the capitalists that are eager to work.

While roadtripping or backpacking through the countryside may still be dangerous, there is little to fear in the bustle of the city.  Do not miss an opportunity to experience life the way Colombia lives it.
We crossed the border into Brazil by mototaxi and stayed a day in Tabitinga shopping for hammocks and other supplies that would make five nights on the boat more enjoyable.
