The quaint town of Tlachichuca serves as the base for groups climbing the normal route of Pico de Orizaba. Since the mountain lies several miles away, nearly all climbers hire a four wheel drive transport to get them to the Casa Grande refugio at 14,000 feet. Most travel guides suggest the services of the Reyes compound. The Reyes family's well-earned reputation brings an overwhelming majority of Orizaba's traffic to their door. In an effort to spread the wealth, I walked a few blocks further and found an incredibly clean and modern hotel that has years of experience informing and transporting Orizaba climbers. I spent a very special Christmas Eve with Don Gerardo and his family. I highly recommend taking advantage of the competetive prices and friendly service they offer.
